From Meter to Smart Metering System (iMsys)

In Germany, there are more than 44 million meter locations. Approximately 50% of these are over 40 years old. Energy consumption was measured using analog meters, which were read manually, often leading to inefficiency, inaccuracies, and billing delays.

Smart metering systems perform data collection and transmission almost in real time. This offers numerous advantages for both utility companies and consumers.

What is a Smart Meter?

A smart meter is a digital, intelligent electricity meter that measures your electricity consumption in real time and automatically transmits the data, encrypted, to the grid operator or metering point operator.

Unlike conventional, mechanical meters, which only display total consumption, a smart meter enables precise time-based recording, transparent consumption analysis, and more accurate billing.

A smart meter – also called an intelligent metering system (iMSys) – consists of two components:

• the digital meter
• a communication module (“gateway”) that securely transmits the data.

With this technology, your electricity provider can bill you hourly at the current market price and give you insights into your personal consumption patterns. Previously, smart meters were only mandatory for households with an annual consumption of over 6,000 kWh or with an electric car or solar power system. However, since the “Act to Restart the Digitization of the Energy Transition” (April 2023), all households can voluntarily upgrade and benefit from the numerous advantages.
